Barceló Nasandhura launches BMarket rooftop food and lifestyle market in Malé

Barceló Nasandhura Malé is introducing a new rooftop market concept in the capital, bringing together interactive food stalls, Mexican cuisine, local creative businesses and live entertainment.

BMarket will make its debut on Friday, 11 September, from 5.30pm to 10.30pm at B.Heaven Rooftop. The hotel plans to develop the concept into a recurring event on Malé’s social calendar, with gastronomy forming one of its central components.

For chefs and food and beverage professionals, BMarket represents another approach to dining beyond the conventional restaurant format. The event uses the rooftop as an open marketplace where food stalls, entertainment and retail experiences operate alongside each other, giving guests the opportunity to move between different culinary and lifestyle offerings during the evening.

The inaugural edition will have a strong Mexican food focus, led by an Unlimited Tacos experience priced at MVR 399 nett per person. Other Mexican dishes will be available from MVR 99 nett per person.

Rather than presenting the food through a traditional seated meal, BMarket will use interactive stalls, placing preparation and service closer to guests. The format reflects the increasingly experiential nature of food and beverage programming, where interaction, atmosphere and live elements become part of how a dish is presented and consumed.

Tacos are particularly suited to such a setting. Built around relatively simple components, their execution depends heavily on balance between the tortilla, filling, sauces, acidity, texture and garnishes. Served through a live or market-style format, they also allow culinary teams to prepare and assemble dishes in front of guests while maintaining the informal character associated with Mexican street food.

The Unlimited Tacos offering will serve as the principal culinary attraction for BMarket’s opening edition, while the wider selection of Mexican dishes will give visitors the option of exploring individual items throughout the evening.

The culinary programme will be accompanied by live musical performances, positioning BMarket as both a food event and a social gathering rather than solely a dining promotion.

Another defining element of the concept is the integration of Maldivian creative businesses into the hotel environment. For its debut, BMarket will feature The Clay Studio and Island Bazaar, bringing locally developed craft and lifestyle products into the rooftop marketplace.

The Clay Studio will showcase handcrafted work and offer a complimentary Taster Wheel Throwing Class for two, introducing an interactive craft element alongside the food experiences.

Island Bazaar will present its range of contemporary artisan apparel, accessories and heritage-inspired lifestyle products. Its participation adds a retail component to the evening while creating a platform where local design and hospitality can intersect.

“With BMarket, we are introducing a completely fresh destination concept for Malé City, one that brings world-class hospitality and local culture together in an elevated rooftop setting,” said Enric Reina, Hotel Manager at Barceló Nasandhura Malé.

“By collaborating with exceptional local suppliers and creative talent, we are providing a sophisticated platform that takes Maldivian craftsmanship and lifestyle to new heights.”

The collaboration-driven format is particularly relevant to the food and beverage sector. Hotels and restaurants are increasingly able to extend their culinary programming through partnerships with producers, artisans, beverage specialists and other creative businesses, transforming a meal or promotion into a broader guest experience.

For hotel culinary teams, market-style events can also provide room for experimentation. Unlike a fixed restaurant menu, pop-up stalls can accommodate individual food concepts, limited-edition dishes and different cooking styles while allowing chefs to observe guest responses directly. Such formats can be used to introduce cuisines, test dishes and create more visible interaction between chefs and diners.

BMarket also brings the pop-up food market format into a rooftop hotel environment in central Malé. While resorts across the Maldives regularly use beaches, gardens and other outdoor locations for destination dining, urban hotels have different spaces available to create experiential food and beverage concepts. B.Heaven Rooftop provides Barceló Nasandhura with a setting overlooking the capital and surrounding ocean while remaining accessible to residents of Malé and Hulhumalé.

The concept therefore gives the hotel’s culinary team an opportunity to engage not only with staying guests but also with the local dining market.

The choice of Mexican cuisine for the first edition adds another international culinary offering to the capital’s food scene. From tacos and salsas to grilled meats, vegetables and condiments, Mexican cooking lends itself to informal, interactive service while giving chefs considerable scope to work with spice, acidity, smoke and contrasting textures.

Beyond the individual dishes, BMarket’s significance lies in its combination of culinary programming with local entrepreneurship and entertainment. Food stalls form part of a wider marketplace in which guests can dine, listen to live music, discover Maldivian brands and participate in creative activities within the same evening.

Barceló Nasandhura Malé said it intends to establish BMarket as a signature recurring fixture in the city. If developed across future editions, the format could provide opportunities for changing culinary themes, chef-led concepts and collaborations with local businesses, giving each market a distinct food and lifestyle programme.

The first BMarket will take place at B.Heaven Rooftop at Barceló Nasandhura Malé on Friday, 11 September, from 5.30pm to 10.30pm. The Unlimited Tacos experience is priced at MVR 399 nett per person, with other Mexican dishes available from MVR 99 nett.
