The Standard, Maldives launches month-long wellness dining programme at Joos Café

The Standard, Maldives has unveiled a month-long Wellness Month programme that places functional gastronomy at the forefront of the guest experience, with a four-week culinary journey showcasing nutrient-rich ingredients, plant-forward cooking and wellness-inspired beverages.

Available throughout August at Joos Café, the programme highlights the growing role of wellness cuisine in luxury hospitality, demonstrating how chefs are increasingly designing menus that balance nutrition, flavour and presentation while responding to the demand for healthier dining experiences.

For culinary professionals, the initiative reflects the evolution of wellness from a spa-focused concept into a comprehensive food and beverage philosophy, where ingredient selection, menu composition and nutritional value are considered alongside creativity and taste.

The culinary journey is structured around four weekly themes, each focusing on a different aspect of wellbeing.

The opening week centres on renewal and hydration, featuring dishes such as the Hydration Garden Bowl, accompanied by the Green Zen Elixir, before concluding with the Tropical Fruit Symphony, which showcases fresh tropical produce and naturally sweet ingredients.

Week two shifts the focus to plant-based nutrition, highlighting the versatility of seasonal vegetables and whole grains. Signature creations include the Kale & Quinoa Bowl, paired with the Iron Boost Green Juice, while the Guilt-Free Avocado Chocolate Cake demonstrates how healthier desserts can retain richness without compromising nutritional principles.

The third week explores the concept of mindful indulgence, presenting dishes that combine comfort with balanced nutrition. Guests can enjoy Mediterranean Caprese Bliss, served alongside the Morning Glow Smoothie, before finishing with a Coconut Wellness Brûlée, reflecting the growing trend towards desserts designed with both flavour and wellbeing in mind.

The final week focuses on restoration and vitality, with the Glow Tuna Niçoise, Island Beet Beauty Smoothie and Radiance Fruit Platter completing the month-long culinary programme.

Commenting on the initiative, Director of Culinary Nandakumar Dharuman said the aim was to create a wellness journey that inspires rather than restricts.

“By combining nutrient-rich ingredients, functional beverages, and thoughtfully crafted dishes, we invite guests to discover that healthy eating can be both nourishing and deeply enjoyable,” he said.

For chefs, the programme highlights several key trends influencing contemporary menu development, including functional beverages, plant-forward cuisine, nutrient-dense ingredients and naturally lower-sugar desserts. Rather than focusing solely on calorie reduction, the menus emphasise balance, seasonal produce and flavour-driven cooking.

The culinary offering is complemented by yoga, breathing exercises, meditation and spa treatments at The Standard Spa, reinforcing the connection between nutrition and holistic wellbeing.

For the Maldives culinary community, Wellness Month demonstrates how wellness gastronomy continues to evolve into a specialised discipline, requiring chefs to combine nutritional awareness with culinary technique. As guest expectations increasingly extend beyond indulgence to health-conscious dining, initiatives such as this illustrate how wellness cuisine can become an integral part of luxury resort food and beverage programmes.
