Fushifaru Maldives marks ninth anniversary with Bodukakka–Guest Chef Challenge
Fushifaru Maldives will bring guests into the kitchen as part of its ninth anniversary celebrations this October, with a Bodukakka–Guest Chef Challenge placing Maldivian flavours and collaborative cooking at the centre of the resort’s five-day programme.
The anniversary celebrations will run from 20 to 24 October 2026, culminating in the resort’s official ninth anniversary event on 24 October.
For chefs and culinary professionals, the standout event will be the Bodukakka–Guest Chef Challenge, a friendly cooking competition that will pair guests with members of Fushifaru’s culinary team to create dishes inspired by local flavours.
The format gives guests an opportunity to experience part of the work normally carried out behind the scenes in the resort’s kitchens, while allowing Fushifaru’s chefs to introduce ingredients, techniques and flavour combinations associated with Maldivian cooking.
Maldivian cuisine is closely shaped by the country’s relationship with the ocean, with tuna, coconut, chilli, lime, onion and spices forming the foundations of many traditional preparations. Translating these flavours into an interactive competition gives the culinary team a platform to explain not only how dishes are prepared, but also the role individual ingredients play within the country’s food culture.
For participating chefs, a guest competition requires a different approach from conventional restaurant service. Professional techniques need to be communicated in an accessible way, while teams must work within a defined timeframe and ensure the cooking experience remains engaging for participants with different levels of experience.
The activity also reinforces the role chefs increasingly play in resort programming beyond daily restaurant operations. Cooking classes, competitions and demonstrations allow culinary teams to engage directly with guests, turning food preparation into part of the wider destination experience.
Fushifaru’s anniversary programme will also include a stand-up paddleboard race around the island, with the winner receiving a romantic sandbank dinner for two.
From a food and beverage perspective, sandbank dining presents another distinctive form of resort culinary service. Meals served away from the main island require careful planning around transport, temperature control, mise en place and final presentation, with the setting itself becoming part of the dining experience.
The celebrations will extend beyond gastronomy to include coral planting and guided snorkelling, allowing guests to participate in marine conservation activities while exploring the waters surrounding the island.
The programme will conclude on 24 October with Fushifaru’s official ninth anniversary celebration, bringing guests and team members together to mark the resort’s nine years of operation in Lhaviyani Atoll.
Over that period, Fushifaru has developed its identity around personalised service, Maldivian culture and intimate island experiences.
For the culinary team, the anniversary programme provides an opportunity to bring one of those elements — local food culture — directly into guest participation.
Rather than limiting the anniversary to a gala or special dinner, the Bodukakka–Guest Chef Challenge makes the cooking process itself part of the celebration, encouraging guests to work alongside professional chefs and engage with Maldivian flavours firsthand.
