Niyama Private Islands Maldives will welcome award-winning Malaysian chef Norman Musa for a culinary residency from 4 to 10 November 2026, featuring dining experiences, interactive masterclasses and beachside culinary events celebrating Malaysian cuisine.

Originally from Penang, Musa is a chef, restaurateur, cookbook author and television personality who has built an international career introducing Malaysian flavours and culinary traditions to audiences around the world.

His residency at Niyama will explore the ingredients, cooking techniques and cultural influences that define Malaysian gastronomy, bringing the country’s culinary heritage to the Maldives through a series of guest experiences.

Malaysian culinary traditions in focus

The week-long programme will feature specially curated dining experiences showcasing Musa’s approach to Malaysian cuisine, alongside opportunities for guests to learn about the traditions and stories behind the dishes.

Malaysian cuisine reflects a combination of Malay, Chinese, Indian and other regional culinary influences, with aromatic herbs, spices and traditional preparation methods playing important roles in its identity.

Musa’s culinary journey began in Penang, a destination recognised for its diverse food culture and street-food traditions. His work as a chef, restaurateur and author has focused on sharing Malaysian cooking with international audiences.

At Niyama, the residency will provide an opportunity to introduce these culinary influences within a Maldives resort setting.

Interactive masterclasses and beachside dining

Alongside the dining experiences, Musa will lead culinary masterclasses, allowing participants to explore Malaysian cooking through interactive sessions.

The masterclasses will offer guests opportunities to engage directly with the visiting chef and learn more about the ingredients, techniques and flavour combinations associated with Malaysian cuisine.

Beachside culinary experiences will also form part of the programme, bringing Malaysian flavours into Niyama’s island dining environment.

For the resort’s culinary professionals, the residency will provide exposure to a visiting chef’s approach to regional cuisine, from traditional flavour development to contemporary culinary presentation.

The programme adds to Niyama Private Islands Maldives’ calendar of visiting-chef collaborations, which introduce international culinary traditions through special dinners and cooking experiences.

Through Musa’s residency, the resort will showcase Malaysian gastronomy while providing opportunities for guests to discover the culinary heritage of Penang and the wider country.

The Malaysian culinary programme will run from 4 to 10 November 2026 at Niyama Private Islands Maldives.
